Baidu’s CEO: Develop apps
Robin Li, founder of Baidu, is urging Chinese entrepreneurs and CEOs to focus on developing apps for existing AI models rather than competing in creating large language models.
Baidu, which launched its AI chatbot Ernie, faces increasing competition in AI, with a surge in rivals from 70 to 238 models in just a few months.
Ernie, Baidu's AI chatbot, represents China's answer to OpenAI's ChatGPT. Ernie was developed to generate human-like responses in various formats, including text and images.
It was trained on diverse datasets, including texts in multiple languages and content from Western open-source databases.
Despite its capabilities, Ernie faced challenges, particularly with content generation that aligns with China's regulatory standards.
Robin Li predicts in the future, there will be only a few select foundational models, but that millions of apps will be built on top of Ernie.
In a SuperCLUE benchmark, Ernie came short of both GPT-4 and GPT-4 Turbo but outperformed its Chinese rivals Tencent and Alibaba.
