$53bn Chips Act
Microchip
Chipmakers will receive funding from the Biden administration to build out semiconductor chip factories in America.
This initiative is part of the $53 billion Chips Act, which aims to bring back the production of advanced microchips to the United States and counter China's growing chip industry.
With a total of 170 firms applying for funding only Intel and Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. have been granted funding.
Why it matters: To manufacture advanced LLMs, companies require chips. In October 2023, President Biden prohibited the export of chips to China by NVIDIA. As a result, China has been stockpiling Nvidia chips and acquiring some through underground markets.

Fake, sexually explicit AI-generated images of Taylor Swift spread rapidly across social media, viewed 47 million times on X before the account's suspension. Reality Defender confirmed with 90% confidence these were diffusion model deepfakes. As AI technology advances, creating such deepfakes becomes easier, raising concerns over misinformation and nonconsensual explicit content. X's policy actively removes these images, yet they persist across platforms. Lawmakers like Representative Joe Morelle and Senator Mark Warner call for stricter regulations.
Opera, a leading European browser developer, announced the upcoming launch of its AI-powered Opera One for iOS in Europe. This development follows Apple's decision to allow non-WebKit-based browsers on iOS, complying with the European Digital Markets Act (DMA). Jørgen Arnesen, EVP Mobile at Opera, highlighted the company's commitment to leveraging this opportunity. The Opera One browser, featuring elements ready for a "generative AI-based future," is set to debut in March with the DMA's implementation. Opera's move, including plans for a significant AI infrastructure investment in Europe, challenges Safari's dominance and promotes broader competition and user choice in mobile browsers.
