Mistral AI Takes on Competitors

Mistral AI Logo

Mistral AI was announced as a big winner at the Davos conference.

“Chief executives of three large tech companies told the Financial Times the company’s latest AI model was one of the best products, according to technical benchmarks used by companies to evaluate their performance.”

- Reported by Financial Times

Mistral faces challenges like competing against well-funded rivals such as OpenAI, valued at $86bn.

Despite being a newcomer, it has to establish itself in a market dominated by big players. However, Mistral benefits from a growing interest in Europe for local AI solutions and lower AI development costs.

It's also backed by significant investors, including Andreessen Horowitz, and has formed a strategic partnership with Nvidia.

This positions Mistral advantageously for innovation and potential market penetration, especially with its focus on open-source models attractive to regulated entities like defense companies or banks.

Researchers have utilized AlphaFold, an AI protein-structure prediction tool by DeepMind, to identify hundreds of thousands of potential new psychedelic molecules for antidepressants. AlphaFold's predictions, once doubted for drug discovery, have proven as effective as experimental methods like X-ray crystallography. Teams led by Brian Shoichet and Bryan Roth achieved similar 'hit rates' with AlphaFold and experimental structures in identifying active compounds. Isomorphic Labs, a DeepMind spin-off, is intensifying drug discovery efforts with AlphaFold, including deals with Novartis and Eli Lilly worth at least $82.5 million. However, predictions are not universally applicable, and detailed experimental models are often necessary for drug optimization. Competing tools like RoseTTAFold All-Atom are also emerging.

Microsoft-backed OpenAI has banned a developer for creating a bot that mimicked Democratic presidential hopeful Congressman Dean Phillips, marking its first action against perceived misuse of its AI tools in a political campaign. This decision, as reported by the Washington Post, comes after the developer violated OpenAI's policies against political campaigning and impersonation without consent. Dean.Bot, developed by Silicon Valley entrepreneurs Matt Krisiloff and Jed Somers for their super PAC We Deserve Better, aimed to support Phillips in the New Hampshire primary. The PAC, financially backed with $1 million from billionaire hedge fund manager Bill Ackman, contracted AI start-up Delphi to build the bot. However, OpenAI suspended Delphi's account due to its rule against using its technology in political campaigns, leading to Dean.Bot's removal. We Deserve Better and Delphi have not yet commented on the situation.
