Volkswagen has created an AI lab that it says will move forward the automotive industry.

The lab will explore AI solutions for optimizing electric vehicle charging, predictive maintenance, connecting vehicles with smart homes, and enabling in-car voice recognition.

“With our new ‘AI Lab’, we are combining technological expertise, flexibility and speed in collaboration with external partners. This will be crucial in the highly dynamic AI sector,” says Michael Steiner, Head of Research and Development of the Volkswagen Group and Member of the Executive Board, Research and Development of Porsche AG. “We will pursue highly promising initiatives in the marketplace, together with partners where this is necessary, irrespective of existing arrangements and other links in series production.”

Volkswagen will still partner with ChatGPT; and is looking for partnerships with other major tech enablers.

Today’s News in AI

The FCC, led by Chairwoman Jessica Rosenworcel, is proposing to classify AI-generated voice cloning in robocalls as illegal under existing laws, specifically the Telephone Consumer Protection Act, which currently bans "artificial" voices. This move aims to simplify the prosecution of fraudulent calls, including those impersonating public figures like President Biden. The proposal comes in response to the misuse of voice cloning technology in scams, with a recent example being fake calls in New Hampshire aimed at voter suppression. The FCC's decision will be voted on internally and announced if adopted, representing an effort to adapt regulatory frameworks to evolving telecommunication technologies.

The DEFIANCE Act, proposed by Senate Majority Whip Dick Durbin, joined by Sens. Lindsey Graham, Amy Klobuchar, and Josh Hawley, aims to combat the rise of AI-generated explicit images, like those involving Taylor Swift. This legislation allows individuals to sue over non-consensual, digitally manipulated intimate images, extending the scope of the Violence Against Women Act Reauthorization Act of 2022. The Act responds to the increasing use of deepfakes, prevalent since 2017, and addresses gaps in existing US laws, aligning with President Biden's AI regulation agenda. It covers not just AI-generated but also technologically altered images, marking a significant legal advancement against digital sexual exploitation.
